Ricardo ROCHA

Lead Task 1.1 – Infrastructure (Hardware and Services)

Ricardo joined CERN as a student working on the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG), focusing on workload scheduling, monitoring tools and storage systems, and helping with offline computing for the ATLAS experiment just before the start of the LHC. He then moved to work in New Zealand for 2 years, helping set up the first public cloud provider in the country.

Ricardo currently leads the Platform Infrastructure team at CERN with a strong focus on cloud native deployments and machine learning. He has led for several years the internal effort to transition services and workloads to use cloud native technologies, as well as dissemination and training efforts.

Ricardo represents CERN and is active in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), being a member of the Technical Oversight Committee and chairing the End User Technical Advisory Board (TAB). Ricardo often gives keynotes covering CERN use cases at Kubecon / CloudNativeCon (the largest open source conference) and similar events.

Outside work, Ricardo’s passion is aviation, being a glider pilot and instructor and occasionally participating in competitions. Otherwise he spends most time traveling with his family or in the mountains, skiing, hiking and mountaineering.
