Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming essential tools in scientific research, revolutionizing the way we analyze data and develop computational techniques. To equip researchers with the latest advancements in ML applications, CERN is organizing the 17th Thematic CERN School of Computing (tCSC Machine Learning 2025), taking place from June 8 to 14, 2025, in Malmö, Sweden.
The school, organized in collaboration with the Computer Science Department at Malmö University, will offer an intensive program combining theoretical lectures with hands-on exercises. Over the course of a week, participants will gain practical experience in machine learning techniques tailored for data analysis and accelerator technology, two critical areas in high-energy physics research.
The program includes 22 hours of lectures and exercises, designed to cover both fundamental and advanced ML concepts. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their work and engage in discussions with experts in the field. While the school will introduce the basics of ML, it will also delve into state-of-the-art methodologies that are shaping the future of scientific computing.
The school is open to postgraduate students, engineers, and scientists working in academia or research institutes who use—or wish to explore using—machine learning techniques in their work. A background in particle physics, computing, or related fields is recommended, but prior experience in ML is not required.
Key Dates for 2025
- January 24 – Applications open
- March 12 – Application deadline
- March 26 – Invitations sent to selected students
